GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

The International Union of Geological Sciences Commission on Global Geochemical Baselines (IUGS – CGGB) has as its main goals “to develop and disseminate a Standard Methods Manual for the Global Geochemical Reference Network project; to establish a global Geochemical Reference Network; and to prepare a harmonized global geochemical database for multipurpose use. The newly publishedInternational Union of Geological Sciences Manual of Standard Methods for Establishing the Global Geochemical Reference Network” provides extensive information on sampling protocols for rock, residual soil, humus, stream water, stream sediment, and overbank and floodplain sediments. There are also chapters discussing sample site selection; sample preparation; quality control procedures, including development of project reference materials; data management; map preparation; project management; and information on how to level existing geochemical data sets. Applying these standard methods across the globe will produce internally consistent quality-controlled data sets for each sampling medium.

For many years, the Geological Surveys participating in the Ibero-American Association of Geology and Mining Surveys (ASGMI) have carried out various geochemical programs in their territories and generated geochemical information for use in fields such as mineral exploration, agricultural planning, natural environment and public health investigations, and land use management. The ASGMI gathers a group of experts in geochemistry (GEGEOQ) from Ibero-America who discuss, share and develop the geochemical methodologies, projects and programmes that each country applies on its own or in collaboration with other countries.

PURPOSE

“GEOCHEMICAL MAPPING IN LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN:

             GEOCHEMICAL KNOWLEDGE FOR SOCIETAL USE”

  1. To promote geochemical standard methodologies for global geochemical baselines
  2. To promote geochemical mapping methodologies for multiple purpose use
  3. To share advances in geochemical mapping in Latin America and the Caribbean
  4. To encourage the development of geochemical mapping programmes in Latin America and the Caribbean
