Planning the Execution of an Applied Geochemistry Project

Alecos Demetriades

Chair of the IUGS Commission on Global Geochemical Baselines (2024-2028)

The key to executing a successful applied geochemistry project at any mapping scale is “efficient planning”.  Εvery applied geochemical project from the continental to the micrometre scale has nine independent, and yet interdependent, components, which are:

(1) Planning

(2) Sampling

(3) Sample preparation

(4) Storage of samples

(5) Laboratory analysis

(6) Quality control

(7) Data processing and map plotting

(8) Interpretation, and

(9) Report writing.

It is stressed that failure to perform any of the aforementioned steps correctly and efficiently will have a detrimental effect on the subsequent steps. Therefore, the aim of this seminar is to show that well-tested applied geochemistry methods can be used not only in mineral exploration but also for environmental and medical purposes, and that data interpretation varies with the objectives of the geochemical survey.
